Millions (not the good kind)

How quickly is the COVID-19 pandemic spreading around the world, one wondered.

76 days to the first million, 12 days for 2, 3, 4, and 5 million, and as of July 18th, 2020, 5 days from 12 million to 13 million.

edit: increase height of iframe because 28 25 days later we’re at 20 million

note: Situation Report 209 was the final daily COVID-19 Situation Report. “Beginning tomorrow [August 17, 2020] we will begin publishing the COVID-19 Weekly Epidemiological Update which will focus on analysis and interpretation of the evolving epidemiological situation.”

another note (see Data Overview and Visualizations section): Starting June 19th, 2021, “daily counts of COVID-19 confirmed cases and deaths reported to the WHO headquarters on Saturdays and Sundays will be updated on the following Monday.”

Representation matters

Statistics Canada‘s 2011 National Household Survey reported 1,053,945 Muslims in Canada, 3.2% of the population.

7,850,605 people reported “No religious affiliation.”

Ramadan starts tomorrow and it is nice to see elected leaders embrace, celebrate with, and represent the people they serve.

Justin Trudeau – Prime Minister of Canada

Chrystia Freeland – Deputy Prime Minsiter of Canada

Jagmeet Singh – New Democratic Party leader

Doug Ford – Premier of Ontario

John Tory – Mayor of Toronto

This is home

I bet some of the 130,835 in “Other religions” are Jedi.

Twitter embed alerts

Twitter allows embedding tweets on external websites:

Embed Tweet menu option
“Embed Tweet” menu option on a tweet by Shawn “#BlizzardsNow” Micallef

This is great for adding content to news articles, websites, blogs, etc. Twitter also ensures that the tweets are displayed using your current name, photo, and the latest Twitter design.

However, there are no alerts for when your tweets are embedded, and that’s rather unfortunate because I would like to know when someone is using my tweets.

As of April 2020, the embed HTML code is:

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-dnt="true">
    <p lang="en" dir="ltr">
        Looking forward to transitioning into my weekend tweets shortly. There will be a brief service delay while we switch sensibilities.
    </p>

</blockquote>
<script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

So, one solution is to create a Google Alert for: twitter.com “@{{username}}”

Google Alert for detecting embedded tweets on the internets

This will not detect every instance of an embedded tweet, but if Google finds it on a site they’re crawling, they will send you an email about it.
