2006 Concerts

Rock the Mic

shekhar usually rents a car and drives to toronto whenever he visits but this time he decided to carpool with some people. shweta is in india pursuing her singing career and no one else was coming with shekhar so it would be quite inefficient to rent a car for the weekend. so we decided that he’ll carpool and i would rent a car here in mississauga for the weekend.

he was visiting toronto because he wanted to meet his cousins before he went to india later this month and also because there was a concert he wanted to attend. raghav, juggy d, veronica, and thara were playing a gig in brampton. i had never heard these names before but i decided to tag along. better than staying home again for the weekend and playing counterstrike.

shekhar’s cousin, priyanka, was already at the concert along with some of her friends. we joined them and had a good time. i didnt particularly like the artists. their songs were all in punjabi and i barely understood what they were saying. the one song that i did enjoy was performed by one of the backup guitarists. she sang while playing her acoustic guitar and i thought it was wonderful. but the crowd was a desi crowd, here to listen to bhangra and punjabi songs. so half the people left the hall for a breather outside while she played. too bad. i liked it!

later on when raghav, supposedly the main attraction, started singing his backstreet boy’s oh-baby-i-love-you-dont-leave-me-whaaaaaaaa songs shekhar and i went outside. the girls were enjoying his sappy songs so they wanted to stay. in the meantime there were some indian sikh guys inside the hall who had drank more than they could handle, and had started pushing and shoving. this led to the cops escorting them outside the premises and telling them to leave.. now.

it was past 1 am by that time and the cops decided it was too late to let anyone back inside. so shekhar and i were locked outside and had to call priyanka and tell her what had happened. she came outside and tried to ask the cops to let us in but they were adamant and stood their ground. “leave, now.” i took a picture of shekhar and his cousin talking on the phone while standing on opposite sides of a glass door.. funny.

afterwar the show we went to tim hortons, won some donuts and coffee from the Roll up the rim contest, and finally everyone went home. shekhar took the car and slept at his cousins after dropping me at home. long long day but an enjoyable one.

i recorded some videos as well. juggy d is the singer in the black leather jacket and he kept making that “rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr” sound.. the one thats used in “roll up the rim to win” ads. lunato has a really hard time when trying to make the continuous r sound with her tongue while it is very very easy for me to do. i think it is a special desi super power :P

2006 Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day 2006

Valentine’s Day in Korea is a bit different than the North American tradition. on february 14th, women are supposed to give chocolate to the men. then on march 14th the men are supposed to return the favour and that day is called White Day. then on april 14th, the men who did not get anything on february 14th get together and eat jajangmyun and this day is called Black Day.

sikander sent me lots of stuff.. lucky me ^_^. take a look. maple syrup, trident gum, twisted straws, kinder bueno, ferrero roche, a very nice card, and a very nice teddy bear sitting in water which i have to hide from my niece otherwise she would steal it. there is a small wheel under the teddy bear heart water ball and if you turn it, it looks like this. best of all, i got Chicken Little sunglasses which i will definitely wear to work everyday.

V Day V Day V Day

thanks thanks for an early valentine’s day gift. now sikander, according to korean tradition you have to send me something on march 14th. and guess what, you’ll have to find a restaurant in canada that has jajangmyun. start looking ok? :):)

2006 Birthdays

Birthday with good luck

on the morning of my birthday on the 13th, i heard glass breaking sound. i went outside my room to my mom to see what happened and there were so many pieces of glasses on the floor in the kitchen.

“mom, are you o.k?”

“yeah, i just hit the glass with my elbow while i was doing dishes. by the way, there will be so many good things coming this year for you”

“why?”

“breaking a glass is a sign of good luck, some people do it on purpose. it just happened on your birthday morning so it’s a sign of good luck for you”

“oh really? true or not, i will take it”

by now i truly believe it. i had wanted to change my position at my work and it happened recently. i am still working for same ministry but different work in a different office which is what i have wanted for so long. i miss my ex-coworkers a lot though.

i have wanted to learn skiing (i have gone skiing twice long time ago and i sucked at it) and i went on a ski trip with my new coworkers last weekend. we all enjoyed the weekend there and i can ski now without falling continuously:)

Ski Trip Ski Trip

also recently, we, my coworkers and i, chipped in 10 dollars each to make big money for a game. the winner will get all the money and feel happy about it during the upcoming lunar new year holiday. the game is like this. you draw as many vertical lines as the number of people taking part in the game. then everyone is given a random number and they go and put one horizontal line in the slot assigned to them. this horizontal line can be drawn anywhere from the top most part of the vertical lines to the bottom part. basically you make a ladder in your slot without knowing what the final result will be like because everyone else can make their own ladder as high or as low as possible. once everyone has drawn a line then we start climbing these ladders which have become stairs now because all the ladders are all connected. the game stops when you cannot climb any higher and whichever ladder you stop in is the winner. i chose the 5th ladder without expecting so much but surprisingly i became the winner and got the money!!! see? lucky me..

talking about sikander…it was the first birthday to spend without him ever since i have know him. when i was talking to him the night before my birthday i told him, “i know you are in Korea right now, where are you?”, “no lunato,i wish but i am not”, “you you sneaky.. you are gonna come to my office tomorrow, aren’t ya? i am on 11th floor, don’t get lost”

hehe instead of him, a package arrived here for my birthday. best pictures collection since we’ve known each other and very good taste of picture frames, cds with his korean handwriting on it (some letters didn’t make sense:) and sweets..thank you sikander.. when i get home after a long day, i sit at my table looking at what you gave me. all your presents refresh me and make me realize that smiling makes everyone look pretty and happy :)
